PAINTING

As a book that is both read and kept on a shelf, my work is extroverted and introspective. Using paper from books published before 1960, I access the vitality of the books previous owner while considering our present. Antique books destine to be forgotten and abandon I rescue and re-purpose. Combining books with the occasional use of rusted metal, wire, ash, and other found objects I attempt to push the viewer into the past while considering the present. These artifacts were once new but now are a ripened symbol from a past time. Making use of space to gain a thoughtful measure of melancholy, my work strives to examine the in–between places that make up our life and the passage of time. The original books owner had a life, loved, had fear and hope and loss, and died—just like we will. My altered books and mixed–media constructions cement the past and present into one event. In my work I try to add beauty, calm and thoughtfulness to balance the chaos of our current times. I want the viewer to consider the vapid quality of our lives, and that we have little time to be angry, hateful, and sad—something I truly hope I achieve.
